Calcium Hexaboride
CaB6, -20 mesh
(For Deoxidizing Copper Melts)
Calcium Hexaboride (calcium boride) is a compound of calcium and boron with the chemical formula CaB6. It is an important material due to its high electrical conductivity, hardness, chemical stability, and melting point. It is a black, lustrous, chemically inert powder with a low density. It has the cubic structure typical for metal hexaborides, with octahedral units of 6 boron atoms combined with calcium atoms.
CAS# 12007-99-7

C 4.68%
Applications: CaB6 has been used as an additive for antioxidants in refractory compositions, deoxidants and in wear protection. The grade offered by Bayville Chemical is as a deoxidizing agent for Copper Melts.
Copper melts must be deoxidized shortly before casting. The deoxidizing agent must not alter the physical properties or the high electrical conductivity of the alloy. High electrical conductivity is a major property of copper.
Calcium Hexaboride is the only material that does not reduce the electrical conductivity of copper. Deoxidation of copper melt by Calcium Hexaboride is a major part of the copper refining process.
